The History of the Transmission of Cheonbugyeong

Cheonbugyeong is the three major scriptures of the Korean people along with Samilsingo and Chamjeon-gyegyeong. Above all, in the historical viewpoint of the scripture culture, the origin and historicity of Cheonbugyeong indeed go back to the beginning of human civilization. Who made Cheonbugyeong, why, and when was it made?

Cheonbugyeong was proclaimed by Anpagyeon Hwanin, the ruler of Hwanguk State located in Central Asia, the cultural birthplace of the Eastern and Western people. Under the Heavenly Mandate of Samsin Sangjenim, the divine sovereign promulgated Cheonbugyeong, and instruct people with it, which was called 'The Scripture of Oral Transmission from Hwanguk State.’

When Hwanung Geobalhwan, the founder of the Baedal state in the East, established a nation in Sinsi (Divine City), Mt. Baekdu, he brought Cheonbu, the heavenly emblems, and three In, seals, from Hwanguk state as an legitimate heir. Throughout the history of eighteen Heavenly Emperor Hwanungs and forty-seven Danguns, Bukbuyeo, Goguryeo, and until its successor, Daejin dynasty, the kings of the East preached the two scriptures, the Scripture of Heavenly Code and Singo, whenever they offered the great ritual to heaven every spring and autumn season.

During the reign of Emperor Hwanung, Sinji Hyeokdeok, an officer in charge of writing and recording history, created Nokdomun, a deer's footprint character, and recorded “Cheonbugyeong” for the first time in history. During the Silla dynasty, when the genius Confucian scholar Goun Choe Chi-won discovered this, he wrote it down as Haeseo style Hanja on the rock to pass it down to the following generations.

In 1897, Gye Yeon-su named ‘The Four Books of Hongik’ by combining 「Cheonbugyeong」, 「Samilsingo」, 「Chamjeon-gyegyeong」 and 「Taebaekjinhun」 extracted  from 『Taebaekilsa』 gained from his teacher, Haehak Yi Gi. In 1899, 『Cheonbugyeong Yohae』 was published, and in 1916, Gye Yeon-su finally found the old stone of Cheonbugyeong carved by Goun in Mt. Myohyang. According to 「Gye Yeon-su Giseo」 (1917), at this time, a copy of Cheonbu-sin-gyeong was rubbed and sent to Dangun gyo.

In 『Gwangmyeongjang』, published in 1917 by Gye Yeon-su, there is a phrase that shows, “After memorizing Cheonbugyeong for many years with one mind, an image suddenly appeared in my mind, the heavenly place of my brain. The picture and annotations are named Gwangmyeongjang and delivered to Choe Si-heung and Lee Deok-soo.” This proves that Gye Yeon-su deeply studied Cheonbugyeong and recited it for many years, and it also proves that he was well versed in the spirit and culture of Cheonbugyeong to the point where he received a certain image from heaven and recorded it.

The historical and cultural spirit of 『Hwandangogi』 compiled by Gye Yeon-su became the driving force for the independence movements. This can be easily confirmed by looking at the 3.1 Declaration of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea or the Cheonbugyeong words written by General Hong Beom-do. We should remember Uncho Gye Yeon-su, who shed light on the lost 10,000-year history of the East and revealed the true nature of Cheonbugyeong, the original scripture for the archetypal culture of humanity.
